Unless you have experience doing this, I highly recommend hiring an expert. It is hard to fell limbs or trees where you want them, especially if the tree has any decay, as many large yard trees do. If you try to take down the tree yourself, you will most likely end up damaging somone or something, which would cost you more than hiring a proffesional. You could also help offset some of this cost by selling the tree for firewood (or using it yourself) if it is a good burninng species and does have too much rot.
Good Luck!

The best way to get rid of a large tree is to hire a tree expert. If anything happens, he pays for the damage. An old saying in the trades is," I repair what your husband fixed". Stands for all aspects. A proffesionals best friend is a " Do it yourselfer ".
