I am 28 weeks pregnant with baby #2. So far the pregnancy has been uneventful, but over the last 3 weeks, I've been having a really difficult time - head aches and crippling back pain that is relieved only when I lie down in a particular position. My commute to work is over an hour on a crowded subway, which has lately become completely impossible. I am wondering whether this is something that I should bring up to my doctor? Does this warrant bed rest or early leave/disability, or are these just common pregnancy symptoms and I should deal? (By the way, I didn't have any such problems with my first pregnancy two years ago). Thanks!

Mention the back pain and headaches to your doctor, those need to be investigated further to see if there isn't something more serious causing it. It depends on how generous he/she is with writing orders for bedrest.
But in most cases, to be ordered off work, there usually needs to be something serious going on, like preterm labor, bleeding, pregnancy induced hypertension, etc. The common aches and pains and tiredness of pregnancy do not warrant ordered medical leave.

Can you request to voluntarily reduce your hours/days at work?

Unfortunately, you won't qualify for disability, because it requires that you have a permanently disabling condition, and pregnancy isn't permanent. Chances are though, that you will qualify for assistance through DHS, and WIC (women, infants, and children's nutritional program), Some states also have programs for temporarily disabled people through the unemployment office. E-mail me with the state you live in, and I'll try to find out some information for you. Good luck

I would definately tell your doctor your pain situation. It all depends on weither the back pain is causing your cervix to change and a variety of different things. With my last one I was having similar pains and my cervix was a 2 in my 8th month sending me into total bedrest... which with two other kids that's a bit hard. So I would go get checked out to make sure that isn't happening and to get your doc's opinion.

It might depend on what you do versus how you get there? Also do you have the type of job where you could put in hours from home, maybe cut down on the days you go into work?

I think this would be the doctor's decision and he would be the one to write this for you to give to your employer.
