Great for a quick read.

What did you think of the story?

It's a great read (as is "Into Thin Air" by the same writer.)
I live in the Southwest and can somewhat understand the compulsion that drove McCandless on his "vision quest". There's something about the landscape here that can beckon you onward, and it wouldn't be hard to go beyond the point of no return, especially if you made (as he did) a few, seemingly innocuous, mistakes.
I don't think he had any sort of "death wish", but I'd say he had a "desire to look over the edge" wish. And, as Neitzsche remarked:

"When you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you."

I read it, but did not like it personally. Yes, it was a quick read, but I didn't like the way it jumped all over the place, and felt that a lot of the info was "filler" material, such as the info the author inserted about his and others' experiences.

The story could have been told in 50 pages.
