They're usually referred to as emoticons

We call these things 'emoticons' - I suppose it means icons to show emotions. These go on their sides, but yours are right way up.

The ones I see most often are:-

:-) :-( obviously these are for Happy & Sad. You could do one like this ;-) for a wink or a joke I suppose.

Try making your own up - it could catch on.
