Starkers and butch are my favourite oops I mean starsky and hutch.They had some mean looking hairstyles in those days.

with you on Columbo, also loved Starsky back in the day, Joan Hickson is the Miss. Marple and Jane Tennison from Prime Suspect was terrific. In the 80's though it had to be Cagney & Lacey, I loved that show, it was the first time the focus was totally on female leads and the guys were the background players.
In the lead though would be Gene Hunt & Co from Life on Mars, I know in real life I'd find to so totally sexist but on the show-gotta say it worked for me.

Either Monkfish (the tough, uncompromising cop) or the Sweeney (I know, that's two, technically: John Thaw & Dennis Waterman). Columbo is cool, but I'm scared of saying I'm a fan of a one-eyed bobby in an oversized crumpled coat - people might think I'm a bufty!

The only one that spring to mind is Cracker (although I haven't seen enough of the American version to see if the character acts the same way), because of his demeanour and amazing way he could break someone down just by talking to him, but never being able to take his own advice and destroying his own life.
