From my discussions with them, it seems like there are only three that have pretty high academic standards -- Howard University in DC, Spelman College in Atlanta and Morehouse College -- also in Atlanta.

Other schools may have positives in terms of the environment they provide -- but few of the HBCUs are as good academically as more integrated schools.

There are lists of the top ten historically black universities, but in reality, there are only three elite programs:

Recruiters love these schools, as do grad programs. They graduate very strong students. Just the networking opportunities alone!

At a past employer, who hired only at the top ten universities (MIT, Harvard, etc.), we purposefully also hired out of Morehouse, Spellman and Howard. Although admittance into those three schools isn't as competitive as, say, Harvard, we felt their graduating students were of that caliber.
