Hi,
I am a reference librarian at a public library in Westland, MI and decided to do a little looking around for your answer. I wasn't able to find information for the southern U.S. specifically, but here is what I did find:

On a 90-degree day, the temperature on a traditional black roof is a sweltering 165 degrees, with an interior temperature of 124 degrees.
--Illinois governor’s office (www.il.gov)

On a summer day, an asphalt roof can reach a temperature of 190 degrees. (This statement was in reference to New York City.)
--earthpledge.org

In a study using infrared thermometers, the Chicago Department of Environment found that on a 100-degree day, the surface temperature of a blacktop roof reached 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you still need more information, I would suggest calling your local library and seeing what they can dig up. Good luck!

Up to 160°. Depends opn how hot it is outside and what direction the pitch is facing during the hottest part of the day. It also depends on treeas and other types of shade. I know that if it's 105° the surface temperature could reach 160° in the direct sun.

I used to work for a solar panel manufacturer and we regularly saw temperatures above 303 deg F (we were generating steam at 70 psi). Our panels were dark green, so if your roof is dark green or black, you could expect similar temperatures.
