OK, another lawyer joke, I give up, what is the difference between a lawyer, barrister and an advocate? A lawyer usually has a college degree and a law degree and is licensed in a state or states to practice law. A barrister is an English lawyer. An advocate, does not have to have a degree, but usually is a person well trained in a certain area, to be the spokesperson on a particular subject.

An advocate can simply be the term applied for someone who speaks on behalf of another person or cause, whether or not legally qualified. This term is used in the Bible http://bible.cc/1_john/2-1.htm.
The only jurisdiction which uses the term "advocate" in the English language to describe a type of lawyer is Scotland. http://www.advocates.org.uk/ As I understand it, an advocate is a Scottish lawyer who has undergone additional training and passed exams in order to become a member of the Faculty of Advocates. This means that all Scots advocates are lawyers, but not all Scots lawyers are advocates.

I apologise for not realising that I was on the UK page in answering this. I see that across the Pond things are different!

An Advocate is one who having completed the required course of education to practise law has enrolled himself for such practice with the Bar Council under the Advocates Act, 1961 and is thus eligible to represent other people in the courts of law. A Lawyer is one who having completed the education to practice law has not enrolled himself and thus is not eligible to practice the legal profession for the benefit of others.
