The first example I thought of was many of Metallica's fans turning on them because of their haircuts during the 'Load' era.

Metallica is the perfect example.

Linkin Park - This is the biggest revolt of the moment. Critics and long time fans hate this album and with very good reason.

Marilyn Manson - The act may have been destined to get old. Once you stop making great music and appear in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, the fans have a way turning the other way.

The Dixie Chicks - Everyone should be entitled to their opinions. However, they should have thought twice about giving a middle finger to their core audience. The fans they used to have despise them now. This one alone would make for one sick question. :)

I agree. A lot of Metallica fans turned on them during that time, but I noticed that most of them weren't really big fans to begin with. They just liked Metallica because everyone else did. It seemed most of the true fans were able to accept the band's evolution and still found enjoyment out of those albums.

Linkin Park seems to be having a similar situation right now with their latest album.

I also feel that some of Aerosmith's fans have turned on them. Aerosmith used to be a rock n' roll band, and I loved them. But after doing a bunch of top 40 ballads and performing with the likes of Britney Spears, Justin Timerlake, Nelly, and Fergie...it seems they are more of a pop band for young girls now. I haven't been to an Aerosmith show since '97...That show was excellent, but I hear their shows now are pretty weak.

I can't believe no one said it already, but didn't Van Halen have a bunch of fans turn on them when Sammy was brought in?

Britney Spears after she went nuts and shaved her head.

Also The Killers after they made their second album which is a load of crap. Believe me, I used to be a DIE hard fan, saw a LOT of their shows from their first album. I cried when I heard the second album, no lie.

I think the most obvious example would be the Dixie Chicks. Okay, yeah..they are country but now they bill themselves as adult alternative. After dispairaging the POTUS onstage in England, they had the worst backlash in music history. I guess there ARE that many braindead people listening to country music.

Most notorious has to be Bob Dylan's fans when he went electric, provoking Da Bobster to lash out at them indirectly in songs like "Maggie's Farm", "Positively 4th Street", and other hymns of quivering nasal rage...
