They each have their pros and cons.A real lumber yard or hardware store has experienced help that has the answers and full service. Why would anyone in their right mind load lumber on a cart and push it through the store?A full service lumber yard will load it for you and even cut boards the width and length that you need. The big box stores will have a larger selection of home improvement items for the do it yourself-er.

I agree with William. At Home Depot hey are always either in the wrong department or they are on break. Half the time the Home Depot people are so busy stocking shelves that when they see you coming for a question, they run the other way, say it's not their department, they call someone and you have to wait around, or they are on their break.
Lowes is a lot more friendly and helpful. It really depends on what you are doing. Home Dep[ot is more geared towards the construction industry and contractors. Lowes has better stuff for home decorating. Pricing is about the same, but they are usually not that far from one another so just go check it out.

Smile. I love POLL questions. They give everyone a chance to voice personal opinions, based on experience or a history.
Neither or Both are better or worse than the the other, depending on multiple factors; and in all these answers are examples.
Location is one VERY strong; and as an example I offer this.
Where I live there are likely near as many of both, as there are WALmart stores, BUT; to many the issue might be in the commute/ versus any savings.
I might happen to pass a Lowes every day, as opposed to going 10 miles out of my way to an HD; but that doesn't always promise I'll find what I want/need in the convenience. So it becomes a comparative issue; balancing gas costs against what happens to be more convenient.
I shop both; and can attest to many years of being both satisfied and dissatisfied with either.
The issue also deals with,,,in location,,,where is the better MARKET for either? Obviously a big box store in an area of multiple housing developments will do better and offer more of everything, than one planted in the sticks, waiting for development.
The choice can also be analogized to Religion and/or Politics...We all have our favorites. The more important issue however, is that we also can take advantage of our greatest freedom, CHOICE... and like many others; I happen to enjoy an outing to a Home Improvement Store, over a trip to any Mall, just to study the species.

Just to throw my two cents in, the way I've always looked at the two is that if you want to build a house, go to Home Depot. When you to buy the finishing stuff like lights, faucets, etc., go to Lowes. I can say that the help at a few of the Home Depots I've been too has been very poor. I actually overheard one of the store associates give a customer bad advice.

In Toronto we call them Hopeless or Helpless Depots. No 2 stores are laid out with and semblance of order. Looking for an "associate" to help you find what you need usually results in you finding the part. Never buy something without opening it and making sure all the parts are there. The quality of the wood products leaves a lot to be desired. Welcome to the wonderfull world of box stores where the customer is just another fool spending money.

Lowes. Their prices, selection and service beats the heck out of Home Depot.

Have both here and actually get better pricing from lumber yards on most lumber. It depends on what material you want to purchase, but Home Depot gets the highest profit margins in the industry. I worked for many years for a wholesaler and can say for certain Home Depot is gouging you on certain items, like mouldings.

MENARDS!!!
But, if you don't have one, depends on what you're searching for. We recently built a house and our local Home Depot gave me a 10% discount on almost everything I bought from them. But, you have to ask.
Loews had better prices on a few things but weren't nearly as friendly or helpful.
Menards is also a chain and they gave me their most recent sale price on everything I bought.
So, you just have to know what you want then look at the ad specials.
