Just wondering if anyone has noticed different trends in the way Halloween is celebrated where you live (yes, I know, trends are always changing). Some examples of what I've noticed in my town is the parties in the public schools. The school in town still does a costume parade around the town (during school hours, and separate from the big town party)that all the parents and others come out to watch, and they still sponsor a window painting contest (kids sign up to paint the downtown store windows), but the parties themselves have changed somewhat--no games anymore, just a ton of sugary food after the parade, and there are a lot more parents pulling their kids out of school on the day of the party for religious reasons. That kind of thing.
Also, some of the church youth groups used to host Halloween parties for the local kids, with games, costume contests, and haunted houses, but no one does that anymore. Now all the kids go have their own fun.
So just some thoughts. :)

Yes, Halloween has definitely changed. When I was a kid it was safe to walk the neighborhoods in search of candy, now you should go to a mall or something and go from store to store. My school used to have Halloween parties and assemblies where we would sing all kinds of spooky songs, now my daughter is allowed to wear a costume to school, but it can't be anything scary, no masks, no makeup, there's no Halloween party, only a "celebration of fall" party, there's no assembly, no cool witch's brew songs to learn (i'll have to teach her that one myself, i guess). Things have definitely changed, and yes, trends ARE always changing, but not always for the better. Also, I just paid 40.00 for her costume (because I caved when I shouldn't have, but that's a different story!), and 29.00 for my son's; when I was younger my mom would just make ours out of stuff we already had or she would go to the Salvation Army and find something, even trick or treat Bags are expensive nowadays!! Whatever happened to a pillowcase or a cheap paper bag, times are definitely changing.

Hmmm well costumes are better, and adults seem to be more into it than ever. Stores start selling stuff earlier. There were no such thing as halloween lights when I was a kid.
Also I lived in a very religious town when I was young and no one objected to Halloween that I knew of then. Now there's all this hubbub about its pagan origins, which is true of most major holidays. But for kids the point is to have fun. I wish people wouldn't get in the way of that.

Halloween is kinda lame now for kids anyway.
Most of the schools don't acknowledge it for fear of offending someone. Parents rarely let their kids out alone to experience trick or treat night like I got to. And It seems to be all about candy, not fun. Unless you are an adult, and then it can be an excuse to dress up and drink a lot. (ok that last bit hasn't changed)
