I use talktalk, i have occational probs too.
I dont think any broadband providers are faultless.
But go for broadband.
If your school has wifi (i think its common in schools nowdays) you can use that. free broadband.
get a laptop with wifi or get a wifi plugin pen for about £15.

I used Tiscali for years without problems until they started getting more and more popular and then everything seemed so slow and great problems. Switched to BT Broadband with Home Hub and can honestly say was one of the best things I've ever done. Completely satisfied and recommend to everybody who wants or needs broadband connection.

Tiscali is AWFUL - stay away.
Im on sky broadband which is available if you have sky television, only £5 extra ontop of my sky subscription which is £15 so for both sky digital and broadband i only pay £20 a month. Plus when i changed from the pitiful tiscali to sky, my broadband speed went from 1mbps to 6mbps, and i got a free wifi router so im very pleased with sky.

i,ve been with bt for years and they are crap.
my Internet is always dropping its connection resulting in two hours on the phone to people from another country that i can,t understand.
the home hub thing is junk it won,t let anything connect to you PC.
especially if you want to host a game or something.
it has its own firewall built in which is a real pain to work out.

Any of the cable providers is a good choice.
Followed by DSL from one of the Phone companies.
And, of course Dial-up as a last resort.
Bare in mind, you may very well be limited as to the service available in the area.
Not all are offered in all areas, thus making your choices limited.
