What you put out to the universe around you should be done without forthought of what might come back to you. Its a karma thing ... Good comes back as does bad ... but if you try to "plan" that outcome, it will backfire on you.

If u always act keeping in mind the outcome, it is a business!
Many times, we regret the result, if the effeorts were high.
I give u a simple example-I remember my niece told me after board exam that all her hard work has gone into drain b coz the papers were so easy! She could have scored equal marks with much less study! Now it appears correct prima facie but not true. Did she knew papers are going to be damn easy? why did she work hard?-to score high in any circumstances!
The same applies to ur sentence--Be sincere in ur efforts, it pays-directly or indirectly.

In ball sports this is called, "Don't take your eyes off the ball."
Complex and difficult activities a enjoyable for people who like a challenge. This might be developing a language, stopping a war, fighting a war, building a bridge, resolving a deep personal conflict and so on. If the goal is confused with the personal gain to be had, the goal will rarely be achieved.

The gita tell us explicitly 'Do action, but renounce the fruits of the action' the good and the bad results (fruits), thus reducing sorrow and expectations. However, it wants us always to do action as if we need the fruits, though we shall renounce the fruits.
