Octavian, who became Caesar Augustus, ruled as the first emperor of Rome from 27 BC to 14 CE. During that 40 plus years he rebuilt much of the city with marble. It must have been grand indeed when the buildings were all shiny and new.

It was coined as a title for a book 'The Glory that was Greece, The Grandeur that was Rome'. The words 'glory' and 'grandeur' were merely used because they were alliterative.

Now, whether YOU think Rome was 'grand' or not is a different matter, and something you will have to decide for yourself.
