It's my understanding that in the US, doctors will not prescribe birth control pills without an exam. I think it's for legal reasons. You can try discussing it with your doctor, but I don't think it'll work.
Doctors also won't reissue prescriptions for contacts after a year without an exam in the US. This is not true in any other country. Grrr....
Good luck,
Catherine

Yes you have to get an exam to get on birth control. And it is good to have one. The only time they will give you an exam is the first time they put on the birth control. And I don't think you have to another one after that, but don't quote me on that. Just ask the doctor who is giving the birth control pills if you have to do another exam

It's good to get those exams even if you are taking bc. That way you know that you are healthy. But if you don't want the exam but you want bc just tell your doctor so. there isn't really anything else you can do. If your scared to tell your doctor just bring up birth control and let them explain it to you and then bring up the question of do you need the exam even while your taking it. that would be the easiest way to go about it. GOOD LUCK!!!

no you don't as a matter of fact I've gotten a prescription for birth control over the phone without haven been previously prescribed by that doctor. Just call your doctor's office and ask if they can call a prescription for birth control for you or if you have to talk to your doctor directly because he might need to explain to you how to take it.

If you know of a dr. here in N Texas who will give you birth control without an exam, I want to know his name. I have to go through a completely physical every year if I want to continue my birth control. I think it's their way of keeping you healthy--blackmailing you with bc pills.

If you are sexually active, a doctor will want to do a gyn exam to do a pap test (checks for HPV - a sexually transmitted disease that causes cervical cancer). Geting a gyn exam on a regular basis (every 1 -3 years) is very important if you are sexually active.

It will vary from doctor to doctor. With a primary care physician it may not be necessary but a gynecologist tends to do one when the pill is being considered to find out what kind of a medical history a patient has to see if the pill is safe for their situation.

No you shouldn't need an examination to receive a script for the pill. But if you are having sex you should be having a Pap smear test every 2 yrs for safety sake.
Ask the Doctor.

Yes you do. The gynecologist has to assess you to see if you are a candidate for birth control pills before prescribing them.

for a prescription method i am 99% sure they won't do it without the exam once a year. of course there are plenty of over the counter products these days you can buy until you are ready for the exam.
