Yes-I work harder. I get up earlier and go to bed later (his schedule has been posted). It doesn't mean I'm "better than him, but the reality is I do work harder. When I'm on vacation--which has been 5 days this year--I have to be available by email and phone. I actually have to be available 24/7 every day. I always work 6 days a week. It was my choice to choose this job knowing what demands it would place on me, but there's nothing particularly unique about me. I know doctors who are always on call. I only run a department at my workplace. There are at least 10 other persons who have the same schedule as me, plus countless fire, police and detention center officers who have jobs that never cease. For my co-workers in the fire department, their jobs get a bit lighter in the winter, but from about March until November, they have to be available 24/7. EDIT: I've thought more about your question for a few hours. I don't think my job responsibilities are anything comparable to those of the President. If I mess up, it costs my employer a bit of money--that's all--no one's life is at stake. For my firefighters and EMTs, lives are at stake, but not on the level of Presidential decision making. Also, I cannot delegate responsibility to as many individuals as the President. So, while I may work more hours, my work has less meaning.

No. He's not out building the nation's highways or climbing telephone poles or working as a health care worker. His job is to make sure that the people who are doing those things are safe. We might not all agree with the way he's gone about it, but the fact that he's taken on this job is a testament to hard work.
The higher up you get in the company, the less people perceive you as being a hard worker. Now, I've never been at the top, but I imagine that most of those guys at the top (Donald Trump excepted), carry burdens heavier than most of us can imagine. Now I'll be the first to admit that I think that George Bush is a horrible president, but I'll also admit that I'm pretty sure that he probably has the world's heaviest weight of all on his shoulders. Anyone who doesn't think that's work, is very wrong.

People who criticize the President (any President) for taking vacation time is ignorant of the facts.
1) EVERY SINGLE DAY of the year, the President must be presented with a briefing, and must sign important documents (which he must read again to make sure no one has tried to slip something past him!)
2) Many Presidents have commented, after their term in office, that the most productive work was done away from Washington. In the White House, there are constant distractions, and unproductive drains on your time. Also, people react differently outside of Washington. Reagan would not have been able to get Gorbachev so relaxed and compliant if he had negotiated in the White House. A lot of important meetings are held while the President is away from Washington, but he is not, by any stretch of the imagination, not working. Camp David could be called a "work camp", rather than a pleasure retreat.
3) The President is under a microscope. His time is monitored by his appointment secretary, and by all those around him. The President can not run away from work. There are thousands of people badgering him every day for something.
4) Look at the Before & After photos of every President. A four year term in office ages them about ten years. Remember how Clinton looked at his inaugural? He looked about 15 years older when he left office.
Yes, Presidents work very hard.

No one works as hard as bush does! It's hard being the president. Maybe he should take another vacation that's at least two this week alone, and the week just started! He may as well take a permanent vacation and not come back again! We'll just mail him the check for his no show job performance!

Well I haven't had 400 days leave in the last 6 years - and I don't consider reading children's stories more important than actually doing my job - so I suppose I work a lot harder!
