I guess it's a matter of age. I don't think most of today's horror films are worth much. I think Hammer definitely is far better than, for example, the remakes of classic films we've been seeing.
Hammer boasts remarkable actors: Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Thorley Walters, Hazel Court, Barbara Shelley, Michael Gough and so many others. Every film is filled with amazing character actors. In most movies, the sets, cinematography, soundtracks, script and direction are above par. The films look more expensive than they actually were, or so I imagine from what I've read in the past.
True, they had gory moments, but today's films too often "go for the grossout", as Stephen King wrote. Hammer and new films both might gross out the audience at times, but the newer films tend to be empty and quickly forgotten. Hammer films will be played long after people have forgotten many of today's overbudgeted, CGI-laden works. Not that there haven't been some good additions to the horror genre... Most simply won't have the staying power.
I'd rewatch the worst Hammer film over viewing some of the films offered now. Again, some cinematic jewels are still being produced, but most of today's horror films are forgettable. *SIGH*
I want to praise Amicus Films, too. Their movies often are confused with Hammer's due to them having the same look of quality about their productions, as well as sometimes "sharing" actors.

You're kidding! They're classics! Peter Cushing was a genius!
For your information, the Mission Impossible films were the worst films ever made.

Hammer Horrors are classic films - slightly scarey with no offensive evil or torture. The nicest horror films ever made! LOL

No some of the most watched films in UK believe it or not. Along with the Carry On Films, no accounting for taste.

hammer did very well in the states, and if there was no audience for the films the major distributers wouldnt have touched them. i think they were good and still enjoy watching them. dont forget 2 of their main stars were in 3 of the biggest grossing films ever. peter cushing in star wars, christopher lee in revenge of the sith and lord of the rings.
edit: mystmoon your quite right about christpher lee, not many people know he is 6'5 and i remember seeing him on a talk show i cant remember which one but i think it was richard and judy and for a promotion of either the clone wars or revenge of the sith he was on the show and asked why so good at the fight scenes, he began to explain that he sword fought with errol flynn in a movie and errol flynn was an expert swordsman and quite drunk on set and he cut the top of christopher lee's finger off, he showed it to camera and richard more or less went "yeah yeah yeah" what about the new film, i thought you ignorant bastard. i remember seeing peter cushing in one of his last interveiws talking about a rose he bred and named it after his wife, when asked why? he said with tears in his eyes something like i cant wait to die myself and be with her in heaven. his wife had passed away a few months before. 2 gentleman, not from verona but from hammerville

Yeah they are lame now, but they were great in their day! I used to love them when I was a kid. They used to scare me senseless (especially the one with the blood pouring out of the taps and pipes in the house).

Oh no they were great, I used to love them and at least they all had a decent story line, not like a lot of todays rubbish all stalk and slash. That's not entertainment.
