Does the kicker card come into play or is it a split pot?

Yes the kicker does come into play here. It is always the best 5 cards out of the 7. So if the board is 5-5-5-5-A, then it is a split pot because the board plays. Or if the board was 5-5-5-5-2, and one player has a jack in his hand, and another player has a king in his hand, the king would win , because his kicker is better.

It's always the best 5 cards out of 7. These can be all 5 from the table or include one or both 'hole cards' held by a player before the flop.
So if there's a higher kicker on the table than either player's top card it's split pot, otherwise the player with the higher kicker will win

If the 5th card on the table is the highest card then the deck is split but if someone is holding a higher card than the 5th card and it's higher than anyone elses hole cards then he/she is the winner.

kicker only if the fifth card isn't higher than one or all the players. Fifth card highest then spilt pot.
