I have never seen a remake that made me believe that it was justified, except for Heat which was a remake of LA Takedown.
I watched the remake of the Italian Job with a look of constant horror on my face. How can such a simple and ingenious film be turned so instantly into a pile of cr*p? There was no need to remake it.

Yes, in a word - it can be done, but so rarely!
The remake of "The Fly" was much better, the remake of "Miracle on 34th Street" was hugely better.
I would also say that "The Three Musketeers" starring Michael York beat the pants of all its predecessors and that "The Magnificent Seven" is probably better than "The Seven Samurai" (I might be accused of heresy for this!).
The list of shame is much longer though - the remake of Psycho? Ring? The Wicker Man? Sergeant Bilko? WHY?
I refuse to watch any of them and "The Ladykillers" remake nearly made me weep just hearing about it.
Cheers, Steve.

I have rarely seen a remake do a better job of the original. i.e Alfie with Jude Law, what a waste of good money, and War or the Worlds with Tom Cruise, couldn't even get close to the original. As to the travesty of The Ladykillers well that's an abomination.

Remakes are like sequels, there are just as many bad ones as good ones.
On the good side:
Cape Fear
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Halloween
Dawn Of The Dead
The Fly
The Departed
King Kong
Just to name a few

The remake of `the itallian job` was rubbish
The `gone in 60 seconds` was better than the original (although why crush the shelby?). Some are better than others, yes.

Just about any re-make is a disappointment, especially any one that came out this decade. "Halloween" was worthy, but ofcourse I'll always favor the original. The only re-makes that were far superior to the originals were "The Fly" and "The Thing." I guess if you count Bram Stoker's "Dracula" as a re-make, that was excellent to.
But it seems every week another re-make is put out in theaters. It's a lame, unoriginal idea and the movie is always garbage.

Not particularly, especially Get Carter (Why goddamit why?)
Also Red Dragon, what can people not discover originals for themselves? It was a damned shame that they made this and Hannibal Rising (I know it is not on your subject matter but hey!) as it ruined the effect of SOTL.
Not only that but Bryan Cox was far better as Hannibal.

"Sleepless in Seattle" if indeed a remake of "An Affair To Remember" was a good one.
