It's necessary when the actions of such politicians run counter to the ideals and policies they advocate for others to adhere to and follow on a continual basis. Tthey should practice what they preach.
Also, a lot of what government does ends up delving into the personal lives of regular citizens. Politicians should be held to these same standards.

Rather than debate the Democrats on the issues, Republican campaign strategy has often relied on the personal smear. At the same time, Republicans have touted their moral superiority; their family values and their opposition to gay rights. Ironically several vociferously anti-gay Republicans were gay themselves, and it's likely the Democrats had some hand in outing them. What goes around comes around.
In addition, several Republican officials, at the national, state and local levels, have also been implicated in child abuse and public sex. It seems that there is a new scandal every week. Yesterday a Republican Florida city councilman who was accused of sexual abuse of his two stepdaughters, ages 12 and 15 committed suicide in his garage. Unfortunately these cases become public when the wrongdoer is charged, and the police are the ones who delve into the politician's private lives.
If the Republican party drops its pretense of righteousness, purges the criminals out of its ranks, and renounces its politics of personal destruction, American politics will again focus on the issues.

It speaks to the character of the person. I think that we don't go far enough. A great many of our elected leaders have been convicted of multiple crimes, and yet the public looks the other way.
As a sidenote, I'm a convicted felon. People look at a deed that I did 15 years ago, and judge me on it. It was nothing more than a prank, but I am not allowed to possess a firearm or vote. NOW...if that's the way a run of the mill citizen is treated, don't you think we should have a higher standard for our elected leaders?

For members of congress and most elected officials there is no real reason since their power is in their votes and their public acts, and we can observe and judge them on their official actions. However, the president has enormous power and is free to act in secret so it is important to know about his judgment, his priorities and loyalties and his approach to problems which can be revealed in his private life. Teddy Kennedy is a good example. He makes a find liberal senator, but when he tried to run for president, he could not get any support in the Democratic party, because no one trusted his judgment after Chappaquiddick.

No, it isn't. The press takes itself way too seriously. We would have lost some of the best Presidents we ever had in history if today's standards were kept through time!

It's not okay.
But it easily becomes public knowledge when they get caught by police for doing stuff.

We pay their salary - they make laws that affect us. They send us to war. They tax us. We'd like them to stand for the things they vote for or against. We'd like to know who is representing us.
