I believe it is better to believe in God coupled with good ethics. In believing God you must have the moral values since this is a necessity in believing in God. I cannot accept the preposition of believing in God without the good ethics a man should have.
In your question, i cannot comprehend such person would believing in god without ethics. The morality is very important and plays a major role in the conduct of one's belief to God. If given the chance that happens, i would rather choose the latter because there is no use if you believe in God without ethics on a person.

Just because you don't believe in God doesn't mean you don't have ethics. In fact, most agnostics and atheists I've met have a much higher moral standard than most Christians. Religion forces a medieval us-vs.-them mentality, which sure, they preach 'thou shalt not kill,' but what everyone subconsciously knows it means is 'thou shalt not kill those who agree with you or have good connections.' You don't get taught morals by being told them. Human beings have a conscious, and unless they have a mental disorder or a dysfunctional upbringing, they learn morals and ethics.
It's best to not believe in God and have ethics. You get the good ethics from religion without the hate and lies.

Believing in God means that you should have ethics, but if you don't believe in God, then there is no obligation for you to have ethics...

God would prefer if you have ethics, irrespective of, if you believe in him or not.
Much in the same way like, I would prefer having you in my contact list, provided you have ethics, but irrespective of the fact, if you would like me to be in your contact list or not.
What applies for humans, applies for God as well, doesn't it ?

In my opinion, believing in God or not makes no difference as long as one is honest and kind. Many professed "religious" people are cruel and hypocritical liars; many so called heathens are loving and trustworthy. In regard to ethics, ones stated beliefs are not important but actions are.

lynx really has the right answer. There is no obligation to actually do the right thing if there is no God. A God rejector might do the right thing but only if they feel like it. Why should doing the right thing depend on how we feel?

Satan has nothing against ethics as long as you don't bring God into it. Be moral and ethical all you want, unless you admit Jesus Christ into your life, you won't be saved.

it is good for you to believe in god on both terms, I myself am atheist but I say this knowing people believe they will be rewarded for good deads, so they do the best they can.
