"Portuguese police said the McCanns' decision to return to Britain will complicate and possibly delay the investigation".

I thought they wanted to do everything to help and appreciated they would come under suspicion?

And why didn't Gerry answer 40 of the Qs put to him.

Seems veyr odd for people who say they have done nothing wrong.

to be fair on them - they had been planning for several weeks to return this weekend and that is why police moved to put them under suspicion so they could ask questions boefre they left and ask them to come back again.

They said they were free to go to the UK but they would have preferred they had not.

Hence they were pushed to put them under suspicion earlier than when they would have liked - i.e. when they had gathered more eivdence.

I agree with those saying they should have returned twins to the UK and at least one of them stay in Portugal to be available to police.

Widely reported in UK newspapers:-

It emerged that during their two days of gruelling interviews last week, the couple, both 39-year-old doctors, stonewalled 40 questions from detectives - exercising their right to silence granted to them as arguidos.

They are panicking , they've left Portugal faster than you can say 'arguido' and gone back to the UK to get lawyers.

Gerry said they had the OK from the Portuguese police to return home to Britain, that was on the news report so i am not sure why the police story is different. Beside which they can be called back for questioning at any time, the police have mangled this investigation from the very start and one wonders why they didn't ask the British Police forensic team to step in when clearly they hadn't the expertise. Who said that he had to answer 40 questions, where is that in the News of The World, or some such rag. They have been told right from the start that they are not allowed in Portuguese law to speak about the investigation, so perhaps that's a reason not to answer. I am not sticking up for them, but this is a case of complexity and in this country at least it should be innocent until proven guilty.

It now transpires that they never cleared it with the PJ or Public prosecutor that they were returning to the UK. They had told them they were returning today (Mon). They returned on a technicality ie. they put on a form that their address was "Leicester" so that is where they have gone.
If the police want them back they will need to get a European Arrest Warrant, which would hold things up.
They can run but they can't hide. A massive search for the body is taking place today.
EDIT... Teddy..... UK detectives were involved in the interviews of Kate and Gerry and they don't need to keep silent so perhaps they released the fact that K&G refused to answer 40 questions ??? I don't know.

It has puzzled me why they were so quick to return to the UK after constantly saying that they would NEVER leave Portugal until Madeleine was found. I am glad they have returned though for the sake of their twins, they should have come home a long time ago! However, by coming home once named as suspects is, in my opinion, only going to fuel peoples suspicions more!

I think they realised they needed to get the twins back to the UK before the legal system in Portugal kicked in. If they were both charged there then what would the twins legal status have been. Would they have been taken into care.

I also think they wanted to find a lawyer - natural enough, but a bit worrying the one they have chosen.

When the McCanns were in Portugal, they were slated for not giving their twins a chance to live a "normal" life.
Now that they've returned home, they get slated for this as well.

You know perfectly well that they've returned home for the sake of their twins AND on the express condition that they will willingly return to Portugal whenever requested to facilitate the investigation.

Nobody on God's good earth has done nothing wrong.
And nobody has said that the McCanns have done nothing wrong. They left their babies unattended. That was wrong & they know it now. But they did not do murder.
And speculation that they did, is not only uncalled for but cruel.

The McCanns returning for the twins sake is rubbish,if they had the emotional welfare of the twins at heart then instead of tavelling round the world and meeting celebs thy have spent time with them instead of shoving them into kids clubs with strangers. Also the madeline fund money should have been used to hire as many people as possible to look for the missing child day after day after day.

Good. I hope the McCann's do everything they can to make the police's questioning of them difficult because the police cocked this up first thing, now do not even have the character to say maybe they were a bit slow and sopppy, and have had the gall to finger the parents.

The Portugese police are a disgrace and the EU looks like a joke because Portugal have shown themselves to be a thick joke.

I think the allegations are a total slap in the face to the McCanns - they are going through hell right now and obviously the police have given up on the search. If it were me and this happened to me, I'd head back to the UK and rely on the more efficient police investigation service over there.

They said they were going to stay in Portugal after knowing the truth but they changed their mind after been named suspects. One thing is sure, they are very selfish people, they didn't think in their kids during holidays, they didn't cry or anything after maddie's disappearance (now they cry when they are suspects) and they prefer to run away than help with the investigation. Even Gerry's blog is all about him, not about his daughter.
A very fishy couple.
