It depends on what you are looking for. In addition to the Library of Congress and genealogical records, you can also visit your local county archives. It is usually free and open to the public and located in a centrally located government building. There you can find primary documents from throughout the county's history. In 1750 it may be worth looking at the petitions for tavern licenses. Also, an archivist should be on site to assist you further.

I can only tell you about what I have found by doing my research in my family tree.
It depends on the documents you are after. If you are in the UK your local authority have records libraries that can have all manner of local records, then of course there are larger libraries of stuff held centrally in London somewhere, ancestry.com has stuff on births marriages and deaths, passenger lists etc, churches have parish records...
Searching google for names, dates and towns can occassionally throw up really interesting results - sometimes people have the document that you are looking for. If you search ebay sometimes you can get directories for the area you are interested in.
Maybe you should be more specific in the type you are after and someone might have a better answer. Good luck in your search.
