My husband and I just moved in to a new house and the fence is fine. But I know in years to come we'll need to replace the fence since we have the pretty side it will be our responsibility. My question is, our fence ends at the side of our house where as my neighbors fence comes up to almost the front of their house. Part of the fence extends on their property a good 10 ft beyond ours. I don't want to sound cheap but fences are expensive. Will my husband and I still be responsible for that part of the fence?

The fence is the property line marker. It's fine right now- it's still brand new. I'm just curious because my dad just replaced his fence- he had to because the pretty side faced his house.
Their fence extends along the property line I have plants on my side - for the portion of the fence in question.

Check the bylaws with your municipality but usually if the fence is on the property line it is up to both to be responsible for repairs. However, if it is on your property then it is your responsibility. Check your survey of the house, hopefully you were smart enough to get a new one before you purchased the house.

Fences are never built "ON" the property line, but on one side or the other. Who's side the fence is on - owns the fence. You can't make your neighbor fix their fence if they don't want to. I have seen fences just inches apart so that you can have a pretty fence and not have to see the ugly other side. Good luck and hopefully you can make good friends with the neighbor. You can always offer to pay for it (if it's you that wants it nice).

If you have the "pretty side" facing you, it's my guess that your neighbor put up the fence. They are responsible for it, it's probably on their property, not on the "line" like you think.
It's up to you, if you don't like the color, etc, to paint it your own color, you can discuss this with your neighbor if you'd like. This is of course, on your side facing you.
When the band "Purple rain" lived in Minneapolis, he had a house in an affluent Minneapolis suburb. He, without permission, painted all the facing fences toward him, purple, which of course he had no right to do, these fences all were on neighbors property but, facing him. They all sued, the judge threw it out saying, he had to look at the fence, he has the right to look at the color he wants.
Purple, want no bad relations with his neighbors relented and repainted the fences back to their original colors.

The way understand it, the best side of the fence faces the person who doesn't own it. Responsibility and repairs vary in different areas some deeds clarify this, if not talk to your neighbor Im sure there must be a compromise.
