I really hope no one thinks it's wrong to feel lonely. I think what people react negatively to is self-pity. If you complain about loneliness, for example, but then go home and sulk, instead of asking someone out, going to a social gathering, or calling up some old friends, you won't get much sympathy. Everyone feels lonely and needs attention sometimes. It's the way they react to it that determines the response they'll get from others.

Because being lonely, especially if you don't like it and irritates you, is devastating.
