Did they know that the war was going to go on for this long before they even started to make the case for an Iraq war?
I will cite the video that recently surfaced on youtube of Dick Cheney in 1994 saying that invading Baghdad would have been a big mistake, and would take decades and tens of thousands of American life, and that it wouldn't be worth it.

I think that the real question is, why do they want to occupy Iraq?

Iraq adventure was a total debacle and it will be another Vietnam for the US.

I think they knew the occupation would be quick, based on our previous experience in the region.
But when there's an executive order backing the invasion based on shoddy intelligence, what can you do? I think alot of conservatives were against an invasion, especially in connection with 9/11, but now they'll become squakboxes for the administration because criticism is seen as disloyal.
Iraq wasn't ready for democracy yet. They still aren't.
