I have pretty much the stereotypical personality of someone majoring in journalism, philosophy, or communications. I realized I needed to study some thing that would make me money. I'm an engineer, but I was all day in the Communications and Arts bulding becuase I was just never able to get along with the other people majoring in engineering.

All my friends now who graduated from journalism, philosophy, communications, theatre, or art years ago, have a job you could've easily gotten with just a highschool degree.

What the point? Why do some people study those careers?

What I would wonder is why they took those jobs; there are plenty of jobs out there which require a college degree, but don't care what that degree is in. I do find that some people make silly choices initially upon graduating from college that ruins their chances later on. I've known students who, instead of taking a career-oriented job right after college because the starting pay was low, stuck with the job they had part-time while in school. Of course, the pay on those jobs never goes up, while the career-oriented jobs tend to build, and five years later they would have been making far more.

It isn't the degree -- it is your friends.

Almost everyone I know who got a degree in Journalism, Philosophy or Literature has been very successful. Some went on to graduate programs or professional schools -- while others found jobs in industry. I even know lots of journalism majors who work as journalists.

In fact, I studied philosophy and am now a Finance Professor at a highly ranked Business School.

Don't blame the lack of success of your friends on their fields of study -- blame it on their lack of ambition.
