Repetitive inspections are instituted in airports since 9/11 and it is the reason that many travelers tend to be naked to avoid being subjected to many inspections.

Speaking as a Canadian, now we need a passport to fly into the US; I have had pens taken away: I have had to remove my shoes; we have to put cigs and lighters in baggies; we can't take regular sized toothpaste in carryons; and for a while we couldn't take bottled water on but I think that has been lifted. No big deal really.
