Because they're attracted to sports. There is no rational explanation, let alone one that applies to the whole spectrum of male sports enthusiasts.

I think that men are attracted to sport for both those reasons an others. Men were the ones who went out and physically hunt for the food to provide for their families, when that no longer became necessary they subsutied sports for that action. The other reason to me is that men were made to use actions of the physical kind in order to achieve their goals and not that outlet isn't as avaliable to them they use sports to give them the physical outlet that they need.

It's stereotypes and pressure.
Not all men are sports fans, my dad, my brothers and I are all computer people / passive people. Yet I was reading a book about people today and it does show that we're often different and "shaped" in school to be different.
I admit, quite a lot of men enjoy sports, but so do many women, they are probably more likely to try Tennis and gentler sports, whilst men attempt to give the "beefy" image and play Gridiron or rough-sports.
I thought about it, when girls are upset, they cry, when males are upset, they use their fists.
Males seem to, in modern society uphold a strong-guy self image, perhaps pressure from friends at school (Think of a sensitive/gentler person, if they express feelings, they're called a "wuss" and mushy guy, so they act tough to remove that image).
Well, at least that's how I believe it's all set out.

Subconsciously speaking.
Men are attracted and involved in sports because this is the opportunity to expose their, testosterone (masculinity)
To show strength and speed ....!
Just like how male animals show off their fight for the ladies.
Health and sportsmanship reasons.... comes next.

I did some research.
Here is what i personally think is the reason.
It is genetic. It brings back memories of the times when they were young boys and they ran the fastest, or were the best in the sport of their choice.
=========================
"Sports are one of the few things on planet Earth that just make sense. Men don’t want to accept confusion."
They bond with their fathers as young boys only through sports.
Instead of offering us hugs and kisses, our fathers teach us important stuff: how to fight, how to play sports, how to enjoy sports, and whether or not a girl is worth spending money on

My father and my husband aren't interested in sports. I don't have to worry about being a "football widow" during the season. Now if I can get him to stop watching so many science fiction shows...

Its not just men. There are plenty of women who play sports today. It is that instinct of competition to become better to win.
