Previous posts correctly specified the difference in music. However, history point of these dances, especially Waltz, is not presented correctly. Waltz was never a dance of kings and quines. In fact, it was considered too frivolous when it was first introduced. Waltz's close embrace was too much to take for those who used to dancing at arm's length.
Watch this couple. The first dance they perform is Waltz, the second is Tango.

What's the difference between black and white? The waltz was a stately dance danced by kings and queens throughout the various courts of Europe and beyond. Most people learnit by aceenting the first beat (there are 3 beats per measure), but a Viennese waltz puts the accent on the second beat. The tango was developed in Argentina where most of the good tango dancers and musicians come from. It is a dance of passion, the two dancers appearing to be lovers who can hardly wait to finish dancing so they can hurry up to someone's little room and ... well, you know ... tango some more (horizontally!)
The waltz is a social dance done at socials and taught in social dance classes.
The tango may lead you to a social disease.

Although they are both smooth dances, they are acually pretty different. The waltz is the mother of all dances...the princess dance that is very classy and elegant...danced once by the queens and kings...although...it was considered a little scandalous because of how "close" they would be dancing...the couple would glide and spin beautifully across the floor gracefully rising and falling...(it's my personal favorite)...
Tango is the dramatic and emotional dance...the hold is a little different..it's more compact and the couple are closer together...the story behind it is pretty cute...the cowboys of Argentina would work all day and be sweaty...instead of showering...they would just head to the local hang out and ask the ladies to dance...but because they're so stinky..the ladies would stretch their heads back trying to avoid the smell...there are no rise and falls..and the knees should always be a little bent...the movements are staccato...portraying sort of an attitude of a man stalking a woman...the woman plays the part of "i don't want you..i don't want you..well..maybe i do..." it has once been said.."if you can spell tango..you can dance tango..." so the basic beat is...T-A-NGO...hope you understand the difference now!

Waltz music is in 3/4 time, tango typically in 2/4 (some in 4/4).
Waltz uses the standard hold that's also used in foxtrot and quickstep, tango a more compact hold. Waltz has its rise and fall, and the forward steps are based on the normal walking step. The walk in tango is not straight ahead, and the foot is placed in position rather than gliding, giving tango its total lack of rise and fall but also giving it its staccato movement. Patterns are also, of course, quite different.

Salsa is not one of the competed ballroom/Latin dances, but it is latin. Tango, despite its origins in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, is not a latin dance. This will actually even make sense to you eventually, but that's quite a few lessons in your future. The music, the tempo, the feel, everything about them is quite distinct. Rather than worrying overly much about it, you should be patient and let the lessons come to you. You'll start with some basic patterns that are starkly different, and later you'll be able to use elements that are common to all the partner dances and still put the character of the individual dance into the element.

The waltz goes in 3/4...the tango is often in 2/4...
That means that you count to three in pairs, in the waltz. Like: " one, two, three, one, two, three...etc."
The tango is also more competent. It's very expressive..
