Max und Moritz. They are characters and there are a series of books that highlight their adventures. They are written in rhyme and they are very German in theme and activity.

Max und Moritz
and
Struwwelpeter

Great, classic German childrens' stories - a little gruesome, though.

Max and Moritz are ground into meal and fed to ducks - noone misses them because they were bad boys.

Struwelpeter has ten short stories - all of them cautionary tales designed to make children behave - several of the children in the stories meet horrible ends.

But the art work is interesting and the stories fun - if you like that kind of thing.

I highly recommend Emil und die Detective by Eric Kastner. It is a charming, funny little story that it good for intermediate German readers.

If you need something more basic might I suggest Marcus Pfuster's picture book "Der Regenbogenfisch", which is also quite popular in English so you can use it as a reference if you have to.

The Grimm brothers were German so many of the classic children's books (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel were first published in German.

And, look what I just found - all free in English and German.

Try reading stories from the Brothers Grimm but be sure to get ahold of the G-rated versions of their stories. The unabridged editions are a little too gory for the kiddies (in "Cinderella," one evil stepsister tries to cut off parts of her foot in order to fit into the glass slipper).

Get the Bros Grimm.
Do todays German kids read them, I wonder? If the situation is anything like Britain, they read, if anything, knowing perversions of the stories rewritten by feminists.
