I know it's not a simile or metaphor, I wanna say hyperbole? but i don't think so...

If it's not a metaphor, we're sunk - I've been using them for years.

Could be a truism - or maybe I'm lying or just making it up - I've been doing that for years as well...

Hyperbole is an intentional exaggeration which is not meant to be true. Your statement fits the bill.
