never heard of such a thing and why in gods name would it be legal when its called wife beating and being abusive and they go to jail for it.if there is such a state i will never live in it.its not alright in any form or fashin to beat a wife or husband for that matter,and yes that happens just not as often.

I do not remember the state, but I believe you can only do it with an object no thicker than your thumb.
Its where the phrase "rule of thumb" came from.

EDIT:
In South Carolina it is perfectly legal to beat your wife on the court house steps on Sundays.
In Texas it is legal for a husband to beat his wife as long as he uses something no bigger than his thumb.
In Huntington West Virginia, it's legal to beat your wife so long as it's done in public on a Sunday-and on the courthouse steps.
