Sorry but I don't think you can balme dead people. Now, those ancient KKK types that emerge from time to time and are found guilty of murdering civil rights types deserve severe punishment.
So, should the government pay since the slave owners are dead? No, that was just too long past. You now live in a free society and have the same rights as any other American, some would say more with the effects of "reverse disciminiation", quota hirings and special blacks only programs. You ancestor didn't and that sucked but then you could say the same for every aboriginal peoples in the world, weren't Arab ancestors slaughtered and forced into slavery by early Jewish settlers? Every peoples have been exploited by others. I want retribution for those damn Romans that captured Briton and enslaved my great, great, great [...] grandparents.

That's a great idea. Let's have the government give black people money. Or better yet, let's force wealthy white CEOs (who's grandfathers were probably slave owners anyway), let's have them give black people money. And not just blacks, have them give money to the Asians, Mexicans, Native Americans, Jews, Eskimoes, and Middle Easterners too. Let's force them to give money to the disabled. And women, women have struggled too, so make sure that they get their share. Let's not forget the Irish, they were persecuted in the 1800's. Shoot, I almost forgot children, they don't have any rights at all, so let's hook the kids up with some cash too. Let's take all the money from income tax next year (which should be somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 trillion dollars), and split it up between everyone, except for white men ages 20- 85, because they are the racist ones, they are the ones who brought the slaves over from Africa 200 years ago, and they are the ones who should step up and payoff anyone with their hand out today, right? We could do that, or people of all colors could stand up and change their situation for the better, rather than looking for a ******* handout, or sitting around bitching. They could all study, work, vote, and better their lives. I guess I think that the odds of our government (or this countries white CEOs) parting ways with money are slim. So, rather than dreaming about hitting the lottery, or waiting for my reparations check to show up, I might try to better my life and the lives of my children, rather than whining about my current situation.

Hello,
Well why shouldn't a white person of Irish descent get reparations from the British who run my family out of Ireland and took our stone quarry business away in the 1850's. Prime Minister Brown owes me an apology and a financial settlement for our stolen land worth a hell of a lot now!
You see, this would create a dreadful cycle which would bankrupt the world since all cultures and races have been conquered or mistreated at one time or another throughout history.
Cheers,
Michael

When will the "black man rise up"?
When will he recieve reperations for years of slavery?
Anyone who says this and believes it in this day and age is completely silly.
During the American Civil war, over 360,000 Union troops gave their lives fighting to free slaves in the South...
The "White man" has already paid. We've not given you cash to fritter away, nor any other worldly objects. We have paid in something that any person who isn't greedy should respect;
We have paid in blood.

Did you work as a slave? Were you alive in the civil rights era? No . YOU did not struggle, your ancestors did. I dont think you are struggling honestly, I see many strong black men and women out there, college degrees and good people. What others look at are the bad seeds, and you have bad seeds in any race

Well... the issue of reparations is a tricky subject. Slavery has not directly affected any of us today, but we still feel many of the indirect effects. It would not be fair for the government to pour straight cash into our pockets -- that would make no sense. It would be appropriate for the government to increase funds for education inner city schools or help provide more job opportunities for people below the poverty line. Of course, not all blacks (mainly affluent ones) would not really benefit from this, and some other races may benefit -- but that's ok. We're looking to improve the society as a whole. I think they should also increase awareness of the history of other cultures (black, hispanic, etc.) ... all year 'round. The whole reason for reparations is to repair the damage that slavery has done. There is nothing the government could do to fully achieve this (racism cannot be erased), but I think directing more money towards education would make the situation better.

You don't deserve a thing except what you work for and earn yourself. This reparations crap is getting old. Get a job, go to work, support yourself and your family and shut up whining. I bet you never picked cotton a damn day in your life and if you did it wasn't because you were a slave. Those days are gone and I hate that your ancestors in Africa sold your immediate ancestors to the slave traders but I had no part in that ergo I owe you nothing!!!!!

And who exactly gets these reparations? All black people? Or only ones who can prove they are descendants from slaves. And who exactly do you expect to pay these reparations? All American white people? What about me? My family didn't come over to the US until the 1880s and 1890s, excluding my Native American ancestors. My family were poor Irish and German immigrants who didn't really break out of poverty until my parent's generation.
Besides, none of you were alive during slavery. Hell, none of your parents were alive either. So you're not getting anything.

This really is a BIG question. Yes I think there should be some reparation as it was not your fault you ended up in america and got treated the way you do.
I was always taught that there are consequences for all our actions so going by that logic those that caused the problem should pay for it.
Im australian so I suppose I dont really know much about this issue so its a personal opinion based on basic human rights.
However the australian government doesnt have a very good record with our black population either.
Im mixed race myself, white/asian and see absolutely no diffence between people.
