Recently I deposited a check that bounced. I was charged the fee of the bounced check along with an additional fee. Does anyone know if I would have had this same problem if I had just cashed it - even if both my account and the account of the check that bounced are from the same bank?

thanks!

Next time, if the check is from the same bank as your own bank, you can ask the teller to withdraw the money from that other person's account and deposit it in your account (while you wait). You would have to be there in person. Otherwise, if you say nothing, they'll process the check hours later (or even the next day) when there may not be sufficient funds to cover the check. I do this, even if the check is for a small amount. To be absolutely sure, just ask the teller if there's sufficient funds to cover the check. Or you could cash the check (in person), but be sure to ask the teller if there is sufficient funds.

no you won't be charged the fee of the bounced check if you cashed it. just make sure it's not a crossed check (meaning for deposit only) and you will find out immediately if the check is good or not. also make sure you are reimbursed for the amount of the check and the fee from the one who issued the overdrawn check.
P.S. every bank depending on the country its located has different rules regarding checks. you can ask about the account first if you have worries regarding the money in it.

When you cash a check it's sort of like depositing and withdrawing it right away. But you probably couldn't have done that because if you tried to cash the check on the spot the bank would have probably told you there weren't sufficient funds in the other account.

If you cash a check and it bounced, they'd still dock your other account for the fees. Sorry.
