one of the reasons is that people in other countries are actually appreciative and don't expect a hand-out all the time.
i think people get tired of hearing about welfare and food stamps being abused and also of people acting like those of us who work owe them something, or that we should buy their kids' school supplies etc.
i know that some people are truly less fortunate, but some people are just lazy and don't work because they know the government will send them a check every month.

It's said that 'Charity begins at home' but no body says it ends at home. There can be no convincing answer to your question except that it's been like this since anybody can remember. But again, that's not logical either. As long as even one person in a family,a city or a country needs help,he should get the priority than an outsider. I agree with you but at the same time feel we can't ignore needy people anywhere else in the world. So,what to do? I don't know.Perhaps, have a debate on this issue.

I volunteer at the local Homeless shelter in my town. I have also been a Big Sister to a wonderful little girl in the Big Brother Big Sister program. There are lots of people who help out in their local communities everyday. They just don't show it on TV. I guess it's not as important as another celebrity adopting an orphan from some other country. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I just think the media should do more stories on everyday people who help out. It might get others involved.

That is a good question. When I really needed help with my bills because my soon to ex-husband didn't pay the bills after I though that he did. I was a stay at home mom with 4 small children, he broke my nose and ended up in jail. (thank God). I went to Red Cross for help and I was turned down because I wasn't working. It makes no sense to me.

help who in America?there are so many programs and support structures in this country already, what more can you do?there are government student loans, government subsidized housing, government subsidized healthcare, welfare, numerous private charities that give aid to all manner of less fortunate individuals...the next thing they will be telling the government to help them "plan their lives".Slowly turning into a nation of spoonfed, crybabies.
There is real"NEED"outside of the U.S.,like three square meals a day, electricity, potable water..here we waste and glut ourselves on non necessities and ostentatious affluence.

We do it because we think we are the caretakers of the world.
Yes charity should begin at home.
