I know it is some kind of metal.Would it be less or more valuable then a ring made of gold or silver.Can vermiel be bought in pawn shops? Can it be bought in the USA?

It's spelled vermeil (e before i, though not after c, because pronounced AY) and http://www.answers.com/vermeil&r=67 shows the relevant AHD definition as "Gilded silver, bronze, or copper," meaning those metals covered with a layer of gold, and pronounced ver-MAY.

Obviously if bronze or copper underneath it would be less valuable than pure gold for a similar object, and I'd expect also less than sterling silver

I'd bet many pawnshop keepers know the word (see pronunciation above); if not, give them the definition and they'll probably be able to find some in stock.

It is a layer of gold over silver. You can buy it in pawn shops, on the internet and almost anywhere. It is less valuable than gold.
