Wal-Mart sells thermometer ($2) and hot-water bottles ($6). In december, Wal-Mart total sales were 1,200 dollars. Customers bought 7 times as many therometers as hot-water bottles. How many of each did Wal-Mart sell?

I don't know how to set up the equation. Please I need someone to explain it.

Thank you.

if water bottel = x
therometer cust = 7x

7*2x + 6x =1200
20x = 1200
x = 20

water bottel = 20
therometer = 140

ok thanks

Okay, I think I got it. For every hot-water-bottle ($6) sold, there were 7 thermometers ($2 each). So,
1200 / ($6 + (7*$2)) =
1200 / ($6 + $14) =
1200 / $20 =
60 hot-water-bottles and 7 times that (420) thermometers. Problem is, I'm too old to remember the algebra rules behind this. Maybe this will be enough to help the next person along with your answer.

piece of cake, call thermometers t and hotwater bottles h,
and you already know that t = $2 and h = $6
so you calculate 7 t + h that's $14 + $ 6 = $20
Then divide $1200 by $20 = 60
So they sold 60 * 7= 420 thermometers
and 60 * 1 = 60 hot water bottles
Double check 60 * $6 + 420 * $2 = $360 +$ 840 = $ 1200

First define your terms...

Let t = # of thermometers sold
Let h = # of hot-water bottles sold

It states that each thermometer sells for $2.00, so you have to multiply the number of thermometers sold by 2 to get the dollar value of thermometers sold. Similarly for the hot-water bottles, but you have to use 6 as the multiplier. Therefore we get the following first equation:

2t + 6h = $1200

then it says customers bought 7 times as many thermometers as hot-water bottles...so that means we have to multiply the number of hot-water bottles by 7 to get the same number of thermometers sold.
So that gives us:

7h = t

So, those are your two equations. Hope you can do it on your own next time by following the procedure of defining your terms and then using your terms to express the equations.

2x + 6y = 1200

7y = x

2(7y) + 6y =1200

14y + 6y = 1200

20y = 1200

y = 60 ( hot water bottles) 60 * 6 = 360

x = 420 (thermometers) 420 * 2 = 840

840 + 360 = 1200

7x will represent thermometers
x will represent hot water bottles.

if each thermometer is $2 and each bottle is $6, then:
[(2)7x] + [(6)x] = 1200

solve for x:
14x + 6x = 1200
20x = 1200
x = 60

so, walmart sold 60 hot water bottles and

7(60) = 420 thermometers

First, you divide 1200 by 8. Then, you divide the answer you got by 6. After that, you divide the remaining part of the 1200 by 2. Then you get the two answers. Good luck!

2x+6y=1200
x=7y
just solve for the variables by using multiplication addition or substitution to get x=420 and y=60.

have yourself a good day.
