When I was a teen, I wanted to be a doctor-an OB/GYN, & many people said that was unrealistic. Now I already have my college degree in Spanish, but I'm still not fluent because they emphasized more on medieval literature, rather than grammar & conversation, which didn't help fluency. People tell me that wanting to be a translator/interpreter is unrealistic & dreaming too big. I'm not saying I can just straight jump into that field. I know I have to work on my fluency & practice more & get more schooling & training. Those are my long-term career goals.

You have not been unreasonable in your dreams. But people will often insist on sqashing dreams just out of self pity. If they can't do it, then you can't either. It's a sad statement about yourself when you have to belittle the dreams of others, but it is quite common.

You need to have a mix of goals - some dream goals that maybe you will fail at, but are important for you to strive towards, some goals that if you work at it, you probably will succeed, a mix of long-term and short-term goals.

Some people are really practical and never shoot for high goals, because they fear failure. But in the end, they may have a lot of regrets because they never tried.

If you can stand failure, try for some of those high goals. Have a backup plan in case you fail, that's practical. There aren't many jobs in what you want to do maybe, I dunno, but hell, how much of a resume advantage is it going to be if you are only NEARLY fluent in a foreign language?!! So even if you fail at that goal, none of your effort was wasted.

I personally tried to get a PhD in geology, but it turned out I was bipolar, so I failed and am now on total disability and will probably never be well enough to work. However, my local community really benefits from my education, and now I am teaching myself to paint with oil paints, and doing a bang up job. So my goal is to become a major regional artist someday, and get off disability. So what if I fail, my paintings are already nice and people like them.

Go for it! I'm 42, lived a bit.

PS when I was in 10th grade and told the guidance counselor I wanted to be an astrophysicist, he literally laughed at me and said I sure thought alot of myself. The phd program I was in (but had to drop out of due to mental problems) was planetary geophysics. So those naysayers don't know anything.

People suck! You have accomplished something big. Nothing is impossible, you just have to want it bad enough. Work your up to where you need to be to get that dream career. People always worry about others instead of themselves and they start to think that they know what's best for you when in reality as long as you are trying to do something productive in your life and you aren't hurting anyone, you know what's best for yourself! Good luck!
