Say if a person you know, not very well that is, but you do slightly know him, raped, tortured, brutalized and murdered everyone you ever knew and loved. If you are a very vengeful person, would you kill them on the spot, put them into a position where they will suffer for the rest of their life (if so explain how), or would you just let it slide and let "karma" get to them?

When anyone suffers wrong from another, the important fact to recognise is that no one can put the clock back and undo the wrong, and the only sensible course is to learn from experience and avoid further wrong in the future. Therefore revenge is pointless, and the debate narrows to the benefits of punishment and reconciliation. History seems to point toward a balance of both.

This may be a hypothetical question to you, and I'm glad it is, but this is the very situation that governments face when your scenario is amplified to an international scale.

Its costing me points to edit this answer, so I hope you appreciate it.

Revenge against an aggressor makes you feel good initially but the passage of time brings increasing regret. Fighting a desire for revenge is almost impossibly painful initially but in time the pain eases and the scars wear thin.

You know I have thought about such things on occasion and pondered my reaction to such a scenario. My conclusion is that taking revenge in a manner that mirrors the cruelty another inflicted is somehow just as bad... how can you then lay blame on them for their actions when you have done those of equal atrocity? Its like the pot calling the kettle black. If you really stand on the side of that which is just and right, you cannot go about perpetrating such acts and justifying it based on the actions of others. Two wrongs don't make a right- so my answer is I would do what is right and that would be to contact the authorities and do all in my power to see that person recieved punishment that does not bring me to thier level. I have no doubt that Karma will provide a suitable punishment of its own that is both just and wise, and I can remain with conscience unsoiled.

Now if I caught such a person doing harm to my loved ones on the spot, I would not hesitate to defend with deadly force as that is the right of all life- to fight against death. But to commit a premeditated crime of like magnitude upon such a person after the fact, my morals and ethics do not permit it. Revenge is always bitter sweet anyway, and the revenge of the imagination is much more satisfying as it will always go your way and have a happy ending..

i believe in karma, but doing nothing would make karma work even harder and im a helpful kind of person... i would probably kill him on the spot, if not, then after a while i would have to plot or keep failing at his death

It doesn't require any believe or intelligence, just common sense: if the guy is extremely violent, he should be killed, in order to the victims and victims' friends get mind peace and in order to him do not destroy others people lives.
