When I was younger, I often felt comfort in darkness. I would often take walks around town at random hours of the night. I felt alone and lost, and nothing relates to that feeling like walking around streets that are empty, with closed shops, and silence. I felt alone, and the vacancy of the city was my emotional manifestation.

The same goes for rain. It's an easy way to be comforted by seeing your own emotions manifested in an environment that is out of your control.

Hope this helps.

I think it's because life is so different when it's raining. It's comforting to feel like the world changed when your mood did. Things get calmer, and slower, and... well, darker, which are all things that most people enjoy when they're feeling sad.

Excellent question!!

It "washes away the pain".
Rain is hypnotic in its symphony of sound and comforting like white noise but better. It sooths as all water does. Like sitting by a fountain, stream, or waterfall, even the sounds of crashing waves have a soothing ease to them.
Water is a purifier, even to the ears.

It is like the whole world is crying with you. It is telling you to get under a blanket and comfort yourself. The world crawls inside and curls up when it is raining.
