Always... what does't kill you can only make you stronger, provided you are up to the challenge; you will always gain new insight, strength, and courage if you can overcome adversity. Perhaps this poem says it better than I can..
The Oak Tree
A mighty wind blew night and day,
it stole the oak trees leaves away,
then snapped it's boughs and pulled its bark,
until the oak was tired and stark
but still the oak tree held its ground,
while other trees fell all around
the weary wind gave up and spoke,
"How can you still be standing oak?"
the oak tree said, "I know that you
can break each branch of mine in two
carry every leaf away
shake my limbs and make me sway.
but I have roots stretched in the earth
growing stronger since my birth
You havent touched them, for you see
they are the deepest part of me
before today I wasnt sure
of just how much I could endure
but now I've found with thanks to you
I'm stronger than I ever knew.

You bet there is! How does a child learn to walk? By falling down. Ya I know Cliche but it's true. How do you become stronger? You exercise. What does that do? It tears apart your muscles then new muscle grows in between the old muscle. Adversity makes you strong and can build up your self esteem if you have the right attitude. That is the key. Your attitude.

This is the most basic thing, without adversity, how would we know the joy of overcoming it?..... ever accomplish something you were proud of... damn that felt good.... but better yet.. why did it feel good.... only because you have failed before and you know how that feels... this is a principle of oposites....without wrong there is no right... without good there is no bad.. so on and so forth... without adversity we'd all be mindless robots if everything went our way every time

Adversity is only a subjective construction of reality.
Any adversity that you face, someone else is likely envious of how good you have it.

Yes, adversity sets up contrast in our lives so that we can choose a better and more appealing path for ourselves. By showing us the contrast, difficult times can act to cement in our minds the type of lives and friends we want, and it also points out to us the good and the bad things within. Then we can choose to refine the good and exclude the bad and become better stronger people.

At the moment of adversity, it feels like there's nothing good to be found, but there is truth to be found in the old adage, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Further, if one doesn't experience the bad in life, one can not learn to savor the good.
