I am 35 weeks pregnant and have experienced some pretty gross stuff these past couple months. When I lie down for bed I throw up and have to run to the bathroom. It feels like really bad heartburn. I have a dr.'s appointment in a couple days but thought I'd get an opinion from one of you before my visit so please don't leave me a message telling me to ask my dr. because I am going to ask him. I'm just curious on whether this has to do with acid reflux or what.

Acid reflux is when the contents of your stomach is brought up into the esophagus and throat and it can burn. But you say that you actually vomit, which is different than true acid reflux. More contents of the stomach comes up when you vomit that when you have acid reflux. Probably what's happening is that when you lie down, the baby pushes upwards more and your stomach is being pressed on. This may cause nausea or a feeling like you have to throw up because of the pressure. And of course, the stomach contains hydrochloric acid. So any time you vomit, the acid in your stomach gets brought up into your throat and esophagus, causing the burning. It might help to lie on your side if you're lying on your back. On your back is the worse position you could be in. And never eat a heavy meal before going to bed. You want your stomach empty or near empty when you go to bed. That way, if you do feel nauseated, there won't be much to throw up except acid.
Have some water on hand when this happens and take a few sips, it can wash the acid back down. Your Doctor might put you on an acid-reducer such as zantac. Or if nausea is the reason you're throwing up, he can prescribe something for it or recommend an over the counter drug. Might I suggest Emetrol elixer (over the counter). It's natural simple sugars and phosphoric acid. I think it's safe to take during pregnancy but please ask your Doctor about it. It's very effective. Another thing you could try it to elevate the head of your bed by putting some books under the head of the bed. If the head of your bed it higher, the pressure from the baby won't be so intense and gravity will prevent the acid from being such a problem. I hope all goes well at your Doctor visit and you get a resolution to this! Good luck.

Does this only occur when you lie down @ night when going to sleep? Does it happen @ any other time?
It does sound like acid reflux. I would try to lie more upright, prop a pillow or wedge under you (at the top of your bed) to prevent the acid from coming up. It is good you have an apt. with your doc. for a check-up. :)
You can always call your doc.'s advice nurse, each person is different.

I would say it is quite a normal pregnancy side effect - I suffer with this myself. All your organs are squashed up at your stage of pregnancy and heartburn is very very common - I live on Gavison to relieve it, I keep it by my bedside....i long for the might when I can sleep through, will be a few years though lol!!!

It is certainly worth the mention to your GP though xx
