To obtain the right to build, operate, and defend the Panama Canal, the United States helped Panamanian separatists to establish the independent Republic of Panama in 1903; prior to that Panama was part of Colombia. The Panama Canal opened officially on Aug. 15, 1914. It was constructed with much U. S. blood, money and death!

The peanut farmer from Georgia, when he was President of the United States, signed a bill giving away this strategic part of U. S. property, the canal, to the country of Panama, without rhyme or reason and to the detriment of U. S. national security interests! He cleverly (sinisterly?) did this in such a manner that the property rights to the canal would pass over to Panama *after* he left office! Unless Mr. Carter actually despises America beyond the comprehension of patriotic Americans, there was no *good* reason for him to give the canal away! It is hard to consider Jimmy Carter to be anything other than a traitor!

The Panama Canal is now owned by the country of Panama; however they have turned over control of access to either end of the canal to the Peoples' Republic of China; thereby creating a very serious security risk to the United States of America!

The U.S. and Panama made a treaty on the Panama Canal in which it would be returned to Panama in 2000. This treaty was signed during Carter presidency. The Canal is now under the power and legally owned by Panama.

Panama Canal Authority and the Panamanian government. The united states bought the panama canal area back in 1899 for a 100 year lease at the cost of 40 million. In 1907 Teddy Roosevelt issued construction of it and now that the lease is up, its Panama's once again.
