I thought that the spoof of it in Team America was hilarious and pretty much embodied my thoughts on the movie exactly. "Everyone has AIDS! Aids, aids, aids!!" Lol.

But honestly. Some my friends are just so in love with it, yet they don't appreciate other amazing musicals like Moulin Rouge! and Phantom of the Opera. I felt like Rent was just so mediocre and annoying.

I see what you mean, Mike. But I felt like the love between the leads in both Moulin Rouge and Phantom of the Opera was so much more passionate than anything in Rent.

Considering that the goals and creation process of Rent was totally different from the grandious productions of Moulin and Phantom with their huge production numbers and genius creator (respectively), it seems you are comparing a passionate biography with a table top photo book.

Oh yes! It was terrible! Everyone had Aids or was on drugs and also had the typical "I have Aids' hat on too. Well, I guess in the 80's everyone did have those too problems. THe music sucked, the plotline sucked, everything sucked. I didn't like Moulin Rouge though, I thought that was terrible too. I like other musicals though.

When I was a teenager I completely loved Rent. I was a total musical dork and I think the whole idea of including explicitly lesbian, bisexual, and gay characters in a musical seemed completely groundbreaking to 14 year old me to say nothing of AIDS, explicit sexuality, etc. It seemed really great and groundbreaking to my mid-1990s suburban self.

I rented the movie pretty recently and was so unimpressed. It made me wonder about myself during my high school years...

I'm in total agreement but I'm not a musical loving type. My Fair Lady and Chicago are about all I like in the way of musicals. I find Rent to be quite fluffy overall.

I love that musical. I wasn't too impressed with the movie but I saw it on Broadway in New York some years ago and it was amazing. It has a great soundtrack

You may be too young to remember, but during the early 80's it seemed like everyone had AIDS. No one understood the disease. Everyone was scared. I had 3 close friends die less than 6 months after they were diagnosed. For some of us that was our reality.

I was never particularly in "love" with Rent.

Simply being gay is not reason alone to like or dislike a musical/movie.
