To start it is NOT a cockroach.

It is a species that comes from the order Coleoptera (beetles) and the family Buprestidae (metallic wood-boring beetles, jewel beetles, flatheaded borers).

Exactly which one it is... well... in buprestidae there are about fifteen thousand species. Your best bet is to break it down into the different genera because the subfamilies are more or less broken down into the location they live. For example "Calodema" are only found in Australia and New Guinea.

Beetles can be a huge pain in the *** when it comes to figuring out exactly what species of insect they are. Why? Because there are more of them than anything else. Right now, if memory serves there are about 350ish thousand recorded but they guess that are are a total of 4-8 MILLION species out there.

It's a wood-boring insect called a buprestid beetle or a
metallic wood-borer. The borer is the larval stage of the
insect, not the adult shown in your picture.

A cockroach.

It must be a cockroach- look at Lolita's link and at the cockroach in the topmost picture- the flat head with the eyes on top, the plate armor-like part behind the head and the long abdomen covered by the wings.

I'll be damned- it's that borer thing.

I think it is some sort of wood borer. Possibly the Euchroma gigantea. Giant Metallic Wood-boring Beetle.
