it's not so someone doesn't grab the wrong helmet. It's because you can't have more than one person on the field with the communications equipment in the helmet. So for example if a QB were to line up at the wide receiver position or something, the person under center couldn't have the radio in their helmet. It's so the refs can keep track.

They let the officials know what person on the field has the communication. The new rule says only one person on field can have one so whoever does puts a green dot on helmet

its the quarterbacks helmet and it indicates that that is the helmet with the microphone and earpiece hooked up with the coaches. this is so that no one else grabs the quarterbacks helmet by mistake
