No offence-- help me separate fact from fiction-- I've heard that your wedding receptions are fairly small, inexpensive affairs often snacks served in a church basement without alcohol-- is this true? In New England and here in the Mid Atlantic, even a small wedding reception is over $10,000 and is held in a hotel convention hall so as you can see it was hard for me to imagine what I heard.

It should not matter if it is a large wedding with lots of money spent on it, or if it is a small intimate wedding with few guest.. You get married because you love the person you are going to spend your life with, not how big the reception will be..

I live in Louisiana(not in the bayous)where the average income for a man runs $35,000yr in my hometown. The number one job source there besides Wal-Mart is a papermill. These are small towns where the same families have been for generations. Country people aren't too concerned with things being lavish. When you've never had access to extra money it's pointless to become materialistic. And when your brought up with country ideas then the simpler the better. You appreciate more of the little things, like having all of your family/friends together or it not raining. You have to. Of course there are those families in every town that do better than most and they'll spend money on receptions and such or the only-childs whos parents have been saving up for the big day.
My last three friends that were married did so on a budget of around $500-$700 for their weddings AND receptions. Can you imagine that?

Some are small. My Aunt's was a large affair. I think my grandparents spent about $25,000 on it. They had a large church service. The reception was at a very nice hotel with an open bar. It was in Charlotte, NC in case you were wondering.

ETA:Just wanted to add that there is nothing at all wrong with having a small wedding. In fact, that's what I would like to have when/if I get married.

Most of the weddings I've been to have been small. But it isn't surprising....I live in a small town in Mississippi where most people make about $30,000 or less per year. Who is going to spend 1/3 of that on a wedding???
A lot of Baptist churches around here frown on alcohol, so yep, lots of receptions do without.
The latest of my friends to tie the knot spent less than $4000 on everything, and it was a really sweet, beautiful wedding.

In the midwest, expensive weddings are what all the young girls want, but I think the average cost here is around $10,000. Wages are different though so most people cant afford the New Jersey shoreline average wedding where a plate is $75
