When I started my truck up this evening the engine sounded nearly like the muffler was off of it. i was driving it down the road and was thinking why it sounded so rough and loud, and I noticed the lights beginning to flicker a bit on the dash lights and then I noticed the temerature gage was all the way over to Hot as far right as it could go.

I had driven it for 10, maybe 15 minutes by then I pulled over and I noticed , not much but just a bit of smoke coming out of the hood area, it soon stopped.

I called the Auto parts store and spoke with a gentleman there who told me that it was probably my water pump being locked up and not to drive it.

I had a new water pump put on at the Toyota dealership I think last June (not this June of 07 , but the previos June) when I had a new timing belt put on.

I think my engine is non interference, but I was wondering if I did any serious damage or not to it.

I left it there and will have it towed in tommorow to the Toyota dealer

Also when I spoke with the dealer last , they were telling me that on my model of truck there was a Toyota recall on the head gasket , and that they would replace the head gasket for free.

I dont know if it has anything to do with this problem I have tonight, but I was told by the auto parts place that it was either the timing belt or the water pump.

If the coolant had already drained out then you might have heard a hollow sound coming out of the engine since the block/head was empty.

Pumps have an average life span and can die any time. Most dealerships give lifetime warranties on parts and maybe labor too for "X" years.

This loud exhaust type noise sounds like an exhaust manifold gasket or broken connection near the engine.

The question is where is the coolant and was there anythinng locked up under the hood? Alternator bearing? Water pump bearing? Belt tensioner? Smog pump? Powersteering pump?

Good Luck!

Sounds more like a water pump problem, however, with the overheating that just happened most likely the head gasket has blown. Since it's covered on a warranty get it done, and have them check the water pump. Also have them test the fan it should be electric on that model and Toyota's at around 10 years tend to wear the electric motor for the cooling fan out.

those are the three things that could cause the problem you are having with the head gasket being the most expensive fix, but since that is covered it is definitely worth repairing!

The smoke coming out of the hood is your coolant evaporating off your engine block. This is caused by the coolant leaking from the space created by the cracked head gasket, therefore heating the engine up, and causing the coolant to evaporate. Did you notice any marks on the engine where the coolant could have seeped through the crack between the cylendar head and engine block, if so, it is definately your head gasket, if not, your water pump may have seazed again or you have a blockage

If there is blue and white smoke coming from the exhaust, any oil in your rad. coolant and any coolant in your oil then yes you blew a head gasket. A head gasket will blow when the engine temp rises to the point that the coolant expands with enough pressure to puncture the head gasket(heat causes matter to expand), thus causing gas, oil, and coolant to all mix together. If it was not the head gasket my guess would be the water pump. hope this helps

auto parts store guys are clueless compared to the techs at the dealership....they are 100 percent correct about your head gasket...i know it because im one of them...its a common problem and something we've seen hundreds of times...your V6 engine is of the non-interference type so your valves and whatnot should be ok, although with the age of the vehicle and the low cost to add it to the repair (that your getting for free anyway), you should get the stem seals and such replaced anyway, along with an induction service and any recommended fluid changes...don't expect them not to find 3 grand worth of other problems with your vehicle as well...so be prepared and try to talk directly with the technician...they are less inclined to sell you expensive items than the necessary items...those older Toyota trucks are in pretty high demand and i'd say its well worth it to throw some cash at it...we commonly do near total mechanical restorations on older Toyota trucks as their owners have been much impressed with their performance...they typically opt to restore their old truck as opposed to spending 4 times more for a new vehicle

it could be the gasket i doubt it though because if the head gasket broke you wouldnt have compression to combust and the pistons would seize up due to flooding. it would not over heat.. im no mechanic but from what ur saying i think the problem could be ur intake or maybe you should change ur oil.. to much friction due to lack of oil could cause overheating.. good luck man
