I noticed that my brake lights for my car are always on. If i apply my brakes or not, they are still on. I looked at the light bulbs and they are fine, so then, what is the problem. I am busy this week, so i will visit the mechanic next week. What is the problem and a possible price estimate ?

Thank you

The brake light switch is somewhere on the brake pedal, its usually a plunger type switch, try some WD 40 to free it, this might get you through till you have time to replace it.

The brake lights work at all times, 24/7/365. Car running or not running. The "switch" is located near the brake pedal shaft and is alway open when you are not pushing the pedal and only closes when you release the pedal.

There's an adjustment on it but unless you hit it with something it might have just worn out. Very easy and cheap to replace. Like a 20 minute job and a couple dollars for the part. Maybe $50 total?

Good Luck!

It always helps to know what kind of car it is .But I'm guessing its a Ford of some kind . Only because Ive seen this problem a lot. The brake light switch is mounted on a bracket under the dash and its positioned so the pedal comes up and hits the switch, and turns off the lights. The common problem I mentioned is where the switch contacts the pedal there is a little rubber stopper or cushion on the pedal. It gets old and falls apart causing a gap between the pedal and bracket. If that is the case you'll probably find these little rubber pieces in your floor.Simply adjust this gap (switch closer to pedal) without the rubber stop and your good to go.
Hope this helps Let me know.

There are a number of possibilities, plus knowing the vehicle make would be a help.

most likely it is the brake light switch sticking or is shorted out & replacing it would solve it. If this was the case & the vehicle was equipped with cruise control, the cruise control would not function correctly if at all. The switch is attached to the brake pedal arm. Typically replacing it is not that difficult.

There is a possibility you have a shorted wire causing them to stay on.

Faulty brake switch or out of adjustment. Most of them are directly above the brake pedal , some are easy to reach, others could be a pain. Depends on your type of vehicle

fault is at the brake light switch it isn't most likely being shut off when the bedal arm returns on release of the pedal...

cost to fix would depend on if orignal is broken, out of adjusment ot just came loose...

replacement if broken in most cases $8-16 at worst..

install of new unit about 10-15 minutes at worst..

divide the minutes into the shops flate rate charge will give you an accurate price for this repair

rates vary accrosse the country here in Idaho $50-75 hr is common

you have a bad brake light switch on it,it should be running the battery down on it some, you,ll need to get that replaced its not an expensive job to do,the switch cost around 10-15 bucks and about 5 minutes to put it on,not a bad job at all but be sure and get it repaired,it will cause bigger problems later on with it,good luck on it.
